Our tree trimming in Pottstown and nearby towns follows the ANSI A300 pruning standards: dead and crossing branches out, limbs cleared back from the roof and driveway, and never more taken than the tree can spare.
Good pruning is mostly about what you leave. Each cut is made where the tree can seal it and grow back in the right direction. We don't top trees, which only brings back weak, crowded growth.
The usual jobs are crown thinning (taking out some inner branches so wind passes through), deadwooding (removing dead limbs before they fall) and clearance pruning around the house. Chip will tell you which ones your tree actually needs.

Late winter, while most trees are dormant, is the best time for most pruning. Without leaves it's easy to see the structure, and cuts close up quickly once spring growth starts. Dead, broken or hanging limbs should come down whenever you see them.
